State-of-the-art PI digital piezo systems offer several advantages over systems controlled by analog electronics: real-time linearity compensation, elimination of several types of drift, and complex coordinate transformation. Digital controllers also allow virtually instant changes of servo parameters for different load conditions or settling requirements, allowing the piezo system to be run at 100% of its mechanical performance at all time.

PI digital controllers can also download device-specific parameters

and calibration information from ID-chip-equipped nanopositioning stages, facilitating interchangeability of nanomechanisms and controllers, while maintaining the highest level of linearity and precision. However, not all digital controllers are created equal. Poor implementations can add noise and lack certain capabilities of a well-designed analog implementation, such as fast settling time, compatibility with advanced feed-forward techniques, stability and robust operation.
