Continued Growth for PI in Fiscal Year 2022: Further Investments in Capacity Expansion Planned

Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG closed the fiscal year 2022 with a sixteen percent increase in turnover. All the market segments contributed to this development. The Karlsruhe-based specialist for high-precision motion systems and piezo technology started 2023 with the highest order intake in the company's history and, in 2022, increased the number of employees by around ten percent to 1,540. With record investments, the creation of additional jobs, and the introduction of lean production, the PI Group is increasing its capacities.

"In 2022, all the markets related to digitalization and health showed non-stop high demand, which also continued in the first half of 2023", emphasizes Markus Spanner, PI Group's CEO. Globally, the company generated turnover of 282.2 million euros, an increase of approximately sixteen percent compared to the previous year. "In 2023, we will consistently continue the capacity-increasing measures initiated in 2021, creating several hundred industrial jobs in our four German plants."

The company offers products and solutions for nano positioning, piezo technology, and performance automation worldwide. They are used, for example, in the manufacturing of microchips and photonic components, in aerospace, as well as in healthcare applications, and industrial automation. "The megatrends of digitalization and health will continue to drive our growth in the coming years," affirms Markus Spanner.

Record Investments in Capacity Expansion

The PI Group was just as surprised by the ongoing strong increase in demand since 2020 as all the other market participants. Therefore, in 2021, the company launched the largest investment program since its foundation, consisting of more than 63 million euros. It will take time for our investments in new buildings and production equipment to take effect", explains Markus Spanner. "In the last two years, we have already increased output by almost fifty percent compared to 2020, but even that is not enough." He points out that, over the next eighteen months, additional production lines will gradually go into operation at several PI locations. Moreover, this year alone, PI has hired approximately seventy new employees for its German plants. In addition, as of January 1, 2023, PI took over the Karlsruhe-based IBS Ingenieurbüro Dr. Klaus Schnürer GmbH into a new company. All the fifty-three engineers, software specialists, and other skilled employees were also kept on. "While part of the company will continue with core business, sixty percent of the engineering capacity has already been fully integrated into PI product and production development," explains the CEO.

According to Markus Spanner, the company will also strengthen its presence in Asia and the USA as the largest markets for semiconductor manufacturing, photonics, life sciences, and industrial automation. According to expectations, these target markets will grow at an above-average rate in the years ahead.
